Notion second brain: where it stalls a few months in

5 November 2026

A second brain in Notion builds fine. It stalls a few months later. The notes have grown into the hundreds, and you can no longer see what is tied to what, so you fail to find things you know you wrote and write them again. It is the most common complaint from people who run a second brain in Notion.

Sorting into PARA folders (Projects, Areas, Resources, Archives — the frame Tiago Forte laid out) settles where a note goes. How notes connect to each other inside that is a different question. Notion already records those connections as relation properties, subpages and database membership. The problem is not the record but that there is no screen that lays it all out at once: tables and boards show one database at a time, as rows.

So the symptoms of a growing second brain look alike.

  • A note you definitely wrote and cannot find, because you forget which project it went under
  • The same topic started twice in two different folders
  • Material you linked with a relation once and forgot, left connected to nothing

Better filing does not fix this. Making the connections you already have visible does.

Notion-mind reads those connections and draws the whole second brain as one graph. Notes and databases are nodes, membership and subpages are solid lines, relations are dotted. Hover a note and only its neighbourhood stays sharp; one filter leaves only the notes no relation touches. All three symptoms above show up on that screen. It is rebuilt from the workspace each time you open it, so there is nothing to maintain.
